Public transportation from Hanoi airport to city center (updated Aug 2018)

After revising some information on the Internet about public transportation from Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi) to the city center, I found out that most of them are out – dated. I hope the information in this post will be helpful for any tourist in choosing a cheap and reliable airport transfer.

In May 2016, the city of Hanoi launched a new express bus line no 86 runs from Noi Bai Airport (Terminal 1 & 2) to the city center. This bus line is designated for airport transfer with lots of luggage space, information available in English and Vietnamese, etc. However, the detail about this bus line is available only in Vietnamese.

SEPTEMBER UPDATES:

  • 3 new bus stops
  • New update for Terminal 2 bus stop
  • New update for bus stop in the city center (only applicable to certain time due to the new launch of walking streets around the Hoan Kiem Lake)

WHAT IS EXPRESS BUS No 86?

The bus runs frequently from Noi Bai Airport to City Center and vice versa daily. The bus stands out with the color orange with info board in English and Vietnamese.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

It costs you only 35000 VND (EUR 1.2). No ticket reservation is needed. Ticket is purchased from the controller on the bus. You can pay by cash (Vietnamese currency) or any type of international card (Visa, Master)

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

With normal traffic, it takes about 55 minutes depending on where you want to get off.

WHERE CAN I CATCH THE BUS? (information is translated into English)

  1. From Noi Bai Airport Terminal 1 (Domestic terminal): Right outside the terminal with the orange signpost.

2. From Noi Bai Airport Terminal 2 (International terminal): Proceed to the stand no 02 outside the terminal, cross the road and the bus stop is right there. It is opposite the stand no 02.

3. List of stops

  • From city center to airport: Hanoi Central Railway Station -> bus stop opposite the Melia Hotel -> Hanoi Post Office (Buu Dien Bo Ho) -> 23 Hang Tre –> Long Bien Transpoint station (E11) -> bus stop at intersection Yen Phu – Cua Bac ->  bus stop at intersection Au Co – Xuan Dieu -> Au Co – Lac Long Quan (468 Au Co) –> VAECO Company –> Terminal 1 -> Terminal 2.
  • From airport to city center: Terminal 1 -> Terminal 2 -> VAECO Company –> Au Co – Lac Long Quan (523 Au Co str)–> Au Co – Xuan Dieu stop -> bus stop at intersection Yen Phu – Cua Bac -> Long Bien Transpoint station -> 142 Tran Quang Khai –> Hanoi Opera House -> Hanoi Melia Hotel -> Hanoi Central Railway Station

HOW ABOUT THE TIMETABLE?

bus

The left table is from Railway station to airport. The right table is from airport to city center

THINGS TO REMEMBER AND TIPS:

1.There is no restriction regarding baggage allowance on the bus.

2. The travel time between bus stops in the city center is only 5 – 10mins so be sure to make it on time.

3. Please avoid the “Long Bien” stop. Although I’m Vietnamese, I feel unsecured due to the complication there (lots of pickpockets).

4. Starting from 01/09/2016, because of the event “Walking around the Sword Lake” that organized by People’s Committee of Hanoi starts from 5pm – 12pm on EVERY FRIDAY, WHOLE SATURDAY and SUNDAY every week, the bus express will change  also the stop. With the route from the city to the airport, the stop “Hanoi Post Office (Buu Dien Bo Ho)” will be replaced by the stop “opposite house No 6C Phan Chu Trinh (opposite the Hanoi Opera House)”. This change is applied only to those times that have been mentioned above.

The idea of writing this post came from my Finnish friend – who is now traveling across Asia alone. She finds it’s difficult to find out some information about cheap airport transfer since it is all in Vietnamese. I hope my post will be helpful for all of those who are going to or planning to visit Hanoi 🙂

The information in this post is translated into English by myself. The reference source is from https://www.facebook.com/BusExpress86/

  3. Thank you so much, Suximi. Your information was just what I needed. I am planning to travel to Vietnam this December as a solo female traveller and it’s going to be my first time. I would like to ask you a question since you seem to be the right person here. I’d really appreciate your advice here.
Since I’ll be arriving in the late evening, I thought of booking a hotel nearby and take a taxi to Hanoi early next morning in time to catch the bus to Sapa. My schedule is pretty tight so I cannot afford to wait another day for Sapa. So I was wondering, is it possible to get an early taxi from Noi Bai to Hanoi, like around 5.30 am or am I risking it? Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi,
What time will you arrive? Have you checked with your hotel in Hanoi about picking up service. It has almost the same price with normal taxi.
Btw, it is quite risky because you are young solo female traveler. It’s not really safe.you can check for uber or grabtaxi, they are more reliable. Instead of booking a hotel nearby, I think you can stay at the airport. Nearby hotels are still far and dark during late evening! If possible, share the taxi with another traveler so it’s safer 🙂
I hope my information helpful somehow. Please ask if you are still hesitating something 🙂

  4. Miro

Suximi, are you sure about the ticket price. I have just read on another site:
“I took the 86 bus from the airport to the city center, as of September 2016 was 37000 dong.”

AND, thanks for all the info, it will be helpful when we arrive in Hanoi 🙂

Hi there, we are arriving in Hanoi soon and want to take this bus. I’ve seen a few different version of the stops on different websites and am wondering if you could help us confirm if the bus still stops at Au Co – Quan Dieu? Thanks!

    1. Hi,

I have just double checked the info on the official Facebook page of the bus. I confirm that the bus still stops at Au Co – Xuan Dieu (both directions).
Wish you have a great time in Hanoi.

Hi Suximi, Your info on Bus 86 is very helpful. You wrote: from 01/09/2016, because of the event “Walking around the Sword Lake” starts from 5pm – 12pm on EVERY FRIDAY, WHOLE SATURDAY and SUNDAY every week”. My question:
    1. What is “walking around the Sword Lake”? Is the event still going on during March 2017?
    2. Do you know the exact location of bus stop at Railway Station as the station is quite long?
    3. Is the bus terminal at the airport or at Railway Station? Or is it a non stop loop service?
Thank you for your help. Eddie Wong

    1. Hi,

      1. The walking event means during those days, all cars/scooters/bikes will be prohibited within the area around Hoan Kiem Lake. The streets will be turned into “walking streets”. This event is still ongoing until further notice.
      2. I’m sorry I don’t know the exact location. But the railway station is not that big so you can find it easily.
      3. It’s the loop service between the airport and railway station.

I hope my answers will be helpful to you 🙂

Hey! really helpful post! Is the bus will be running 1st of February(i will be arriving at that time) because it’s still during celebration of Tet Holiday?

    1. Hi. It’s still running but with less frequency. According to the schedule, on 1st Feb, the service runs from 5:05 am till 22:58 pm, every 30 mins. For more details, they have updated info on the Fecebook page 🙂 hope it helps you somehow 🙂

      1. Vita

thank you so much, your information is really helpful! My hostel is 13 Hang Muoi Street, Hanoi.I was looking at the google maps and it should be convienet stop Trần Nhật Duật, Hà Nội, Vietnam. I looked on internet and the bust stopping threre. Can you just confirm if I am right? Thank you so much!

      2. Hi.

The nearer stop is “142 Trần Quang Khải” (direction from the airport to the city center). From there, the walking distance is only about 120meters to your hostel.

  10. Ian

Suximi, Excellent information & very helpful. My wife & I are travelling to Hanoi arriving 5th May about 9:35 in the morning. The Hotel we have booked is the “Hong Ngoc Cochinchine Hotel” in “Nguyen Truong To St”. Looking at the route map the nearest bus stop appears to be “Long Bien” stop which you suggest is better to avoid. Is there any other alternative?

    1. Of course there is an alternative for you. You can get off at the stop “bus stop at intersection Yen Phu – Cua Bac”, which is just before “Long Bien” stop. From there, you should walk along the Cua Bac street and then turn left onto Nguyen Truong To street. Your hotel will be on your right side (as google said 🙂 This option even has shorter walking distance than the “Long Bien” stop.

On the way back to the airport, you could also catch the bus at this stop. Don’t forget to cross the street to the right direction 🙂

      1. Ian Leach

Suximi, I have just been notified of a change in our hotel. It is now the HONG NGOC DYNASTIE HOTEL, 34 Hàng Mành, Hàng Gai, Hoàn Kiếm. Is there a better bus stop to get off? and is it still the same bus and same cost?

  11. Tracy

This is very useful informaion I looked for. Thank you very much. I wonder why google map does not shows 86 bus route on the map :(. Now I finally able to estimate approximate time of arrive to my hotel thanks to your post; 55min. Thank you

  12. DANDAN

This is so helpful, we will be at Hanoi on 12th Feb and going to SAPA. great help, cause we knew a lot of Taxi Tout over there , no offense. great great great information.

  13. huang tiem seh

My hotel is at nos 15 Hang Can , Hoan Kiem District and the nearest bus stop for me to get down is Long Bien station which was not a suitable one. Can you suggest which bus station should I stop.
    Thanks

      1. Eddie Wong

Which bus top should we alight from Bus 86 from the airport & walk to our hotel, we are booked at Ritz Boutique, 23 Au Trieu Street, Hoan Kiem Dist? Any land mark to recognize before we alight from Bus 86? Is the Driver able to understand English? Thank you.

      2. 1. You can search on google maps the distance between bus stop & your hotel. In your case, the nearest stop is Melia Hotel.
        2. They will give you a list of stop and there is information screen on the bus also so don’t worry.

  14. Marie

Wow, it took me ages and still couldn’t find the info i needed until i stumbled onto your post. Thank you soooo much, so very useful.
I think you may be able to help me further. I’d like to take a train from Hanoi to Hai Phong. Do you know what train station in Hanoi I should use, am getting conflicting info – Long Bien St or Central St?? Btw, I arrive into Hanoi airport at 6am.

    1. Hi Marie,

Glad that finally you ended up the right place 😉

I’m sorry I’m not a train expert in Vietnam. But as far as I search from google (info in Vietnamese), the train info is quite complicated and I will try to explain for you now.

      1. Train LP3/LP2, LP5/LP6, LP7/LP8 Hanoi – Hai Phong depart and arrive at Long Bien st
      2. HP1 train: departs daily from Central Station to Hai Phong (this direction only)
      2. HP2 train: Hai Phong – Hanoi (this direction only) arrives at Central Station
      3. Exception: On Saturdays, Sundays and official holidays; trains LP5/LP6 depart and arrive at Central Station

So it’s pretty much depends on what time you go and which train you will take. For reference, please have a look here http://www.duongsatvietnam.com/ve-tau-ha-noi-hai-phong (in Vietnamese only). If you go to the train station straight from the airport, I suggest you choose Central Station (it’s also the last stop of bus 86). However, as I said, it depends on the train timetable also.

I hope this info will help you somehow 🙂

      1. Marie

        Hi Suximi,

Again, thank you solo much. Very appreciated.

        My journey from Hanoi airport to Hai Phong as follows;

Taking the Bus 86 (your bus!)
        Cost: VND30,000 to either
        1. Hanoi Railway St – Trains depart 06:00, 15:20 and 18:27
        2. Long Bien St – Trains depart 09:20, 15:30 and 18:38
        (for your readers info: http://www.seat61.com/Vietnam.htm#Hanoi%20-%20Haiphong%20&%20Halong)

My flight arrives at 5am so hoping to clear customs, Bus 86, etc by 9am and get the 09:20 train from Long Bien. Cost: VND70,000
Toss up between safety at Long Bien or saving 6 hours – I will be extra vigilant, thanks to your advice.

Else I could take a taxi all the way for $90!

You see how much you have saved me!

My first stop will be at Killara High School at Cat ba. I am taking a lot of educational materials and am hoping to volunteer to work there for a week or so. The money you have saved me will go towards the school children, so a big thank you.

Just a quick question, you may know. Can I purchase a train ticket from Long Bien St or do I have to go to Hanoi main station?

        Thanks for all your help.

        Marie

      2. Hello,

I am sorry for my late response because I don’t know why your comment went to “spam” section.
I am very glad that my information is useful for you. I wish you will have a nice trip in Cat Ba. I was there about 10 years ago and the beach was quite beautiful.
Yes you can buy the train ticket from LB station. I did a quick research on google and yes, they should have a ticket sale office there.
I will double check the info with some of my friends and get back to you if that info is incorrect 🙂

Hello Suximi. Thank you so much for your helpful information. I will be coming to Hanoi in next month and will be staying in Capella Hotel at Lo Su – Ly Thai To. I will be arriving in Saturday which I read it is “walking street” day. Would you pls tell me where the nearest bus stop I shall take off to get to my hotel? I saw 51 Ly Thai To bus stop in google maps which is 600m to the hotel though.

Also, Suximi, I can’t find bus stop in 142 Tran Quang Khai in google maps. Instead I saw 162 Tran Quang Khai bus stop. Do Bus 86 stop here too? Thank you for your help.

    1. Hi,

      1. The bus direction from the airport to city center is not affected by the event “Walking street”. In your case, the nearest bus stop is “142 Trần Quang Khải” . It is about 500m to your hotel. Another option is, as you said, the “Hanoi Opera House” (Nhà Hát Lớn) stop. It’s about 900m.

      2. I double checked with the information on the official facebook page of the bus and it says “142 Tran Quang Khai”.

      1. Verawaty

Yeah, I do read it is 142 Tran Quang Khai. The problem is just the difference on Google Maps.
Thank you for your help, Suximi. I will let you know when I arrive ^^” Wishing you good Sunday.

      2. Verawaty

        Xin chào, Suximi.
Just want to share that the bus stop at 162 Tran Quang Khai. Google maps do have been updated by adding the bus number 86 in this bus stop.
Again, thank you so much for your helpful post.

  22. Suximi, My wife & I are travelling to Hanoi arriving 5th May morning. we are now staying in the “Hong Ngoc Dynastie Hotel” in “Hang Manh”. The nearest bus stop appears to be “Melia Hotel” stop. Is this likely to be the best stop and are there any areas to avoid if walking?

    Xin chao, Suximi,
This is a great article! Thanks for the information. From the time table you have here, it shows that the last Express Bus from the Airport into the city center leaves at 23:05. I had an agent tell me the last bus was at 21:00 and I should book a private transfer. Can you clarify as I’d prefer the bus if it really is an option? We will be flying in from Siem Reap, arriving at 10pm. Thanks so much for any insight you can provide to me!

    Dear Suximi

  31. Hello Suximi, thank you so much for your info.

I’m going to Hanoi too this September and i’m planning to use bus 86 to reach my stay in 82A Tho Nhuom, Hoan Kiem district. Can you suggest which bus station should I stop? I thought Long Bien is the nearest but im still not sure. And if I need to stop in Long Bien, should I continue to take a bus again? Do you know which number?

    Thank you for your help.

      1. Hi Suximi thank you so much for your reply. I consulted to my host and he suggested that I stop at Melia Hotel. Because its only 2 minutes from his place.Just to make sure that the 86 bus really stop in the Melia Hotel, right?

    Hello, Suximi

    Your article is awesome.

    1) Can I know whether bus 86 stop nearby hotel “Annam Legend Hotel – 27, Hang Bee Hoam Kiem, Hanoi, 10000 VN.” Which bus station should i get down?

    2) This is the first time I am visiting Hanoi. I am planning to visit Halong Bay for a day trip. Do you have any agency providing this service with reasonable price and good service? Should I book the day trip in the airport when i reach Hanoi? I have check with the hotel, the price is expensive. What is the average price for day trip?
    Thank you for your help.

    1. Hi,
      1. You can easily use google maps to find the nearest stop to your place.
      2. I always recommend my friends taking the tour with “The Sinh tourist”. They are quite big and reliable. They have day trip to Halong Bay. For more info, please visit their website: https://www.thesinhtourist.vn/
The office is located in the central of Hanoi so don’t worry (add: 52 Luong Ngoc Quyen St.,Hoan Kiem Distr, Ha Noi) . I think you can buy the tour there also 🙂 no need to book in advance!

  33. Anton

    Hello,

Thanks for the helpful post. I was wondering until what times buses in the city operate… I intend to go further down south in the city. After I get off at Melia Hotel, which should be around 11pm from the airport riding Bus 86, will there still be buses around that can take me somewhere around the VNU University of Science area? Or will Taxis be my only option this late in the evening.. I did some research and know Bus 01 will take me to my destination. However, I don’t know if they are still running around 11:30 in the evening.

      1. Anton

Thanks, Suximi. I guess it will be better to book grab/uber straight from the airport then. I don’t know where or if I can find a wifi spot in Melia hotel to book grab/uber, with luggage and all, that very late in the evening. 😅

      2. Well I think you cannot book Grab/Uber from the airport during that time. The reason is most of them are outside the airport, which means you have to walk a little bit out of the airport. Taxi is a good choice but then the price is quite high.
MY suggestion is you catch the bus 86, get off at Hanoi melia hotel and then catch a taxi to VNU. I believe there will be a lot of taxi around that area, or at least it’s easy to catch.
        Hope it helps you 🙂

Probably we will have 1 big luggage bag & 1 small bag. Will we have to pay extra for luggage or just VND30,000 per pax only. Looking forward to your reply. TQ.

    1. Hello,

I am sorry that I’m not an expert in navigation of streets in Hanoi. Definitely you can check in Google Maps.
You don’t need to pay extra for the luggage. It still costs only VND 30000 per pax.
Enjoy your time in Hanoi 🙂

    Hi,

We are hoping to get the bus from Hanoi to the airport and are planning on getting the bus from Long Bien Bus Station.
Is it easy to find the bus once you get to the bus station? We are tried to look online for stop E11 but can’t seem to see anything.

Thank you so much for all of the advice, it is brilliant 🙂

    Jo

    1. Hi. “Long Bien Bus station” is not that big. I think you will easily find it because they have only 2 lanes of bus. Not as big as other bus stations (like in Europe). Just pay attention to the signpost of express bus 86 (in orange color).
I hope you will find the location of the bus and have a safe trip ahead 🙂

    Hi Sux

I’m leaving city center area to meet my girlfriend at the airport late this Monday (12 March) evening. I want to catch the late bus closest to the northwest corner of Hoan Kiem lake to meet her 11pm flight arriving at the airport. Unfortunately, there seems to not be a good map showing where all the bus 86 stops are located. Can you recommend the bus stop closest to NW corner of Hoan Kiem? It appears the last bus departing the train station for the airport is 2140.

      1. David

Hmmm, when I ask Google, there are 5 different post office locations close to the Southeast corner of HK lake. It appears you may be talking about 75 Đinh Tiên Hoàng, French Quarter, Tràng Tiền, Hoàn Kiếm. I do wish the Bus 86 route had a map that was easy to find to help English speakers to use it.
